Review of The Pope’s Exorcist (2023) Blu-ray (4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital HD) :
Every year, around the same time, we have at least two possession films. Halloween and Easter, it seems. Most of the time, they fall flat, using the same cliches all over and maybe even trying to be a little creative. Despite the fact that this does not significantly depart from the formula of the plot, Crowe’s outstanding performance elevates the film’s overall appeal. He has clearly found his niche with thrillers and horrors in recent years, and it works very well. The panics are workable and the story is also. It’s one of the best possession films I’ve seen in a long time from a visual standpoint, with great locations and great practical and cgi effects. This does not mean that the cliches do not occasionally hinder it; nevertheless, it is a very welcome entry into the genre.
Oh, my. I don’t know whether the creators of this film were going for parody awfulness or something different however it didn’t actually work. It was primarily a comedy with silly voices. Neither the story nor the tension were strong enough to hold my interest.
Although there were some nice effects, I’ve never seen anything like it before. Although Russell Crowe was entertaining to watch, it was hard to take his character seriously, and I’m not sure how I was supposed to as a viewer. Everything was just a little bit too silly for me. The family members were more like cartoon characters and the setting was too fantastical for me to believe. It offered a semblance of a story for them, but it didn’t really progress. So, unnecessary and silly, but not terrible.
